Mis-alignment of Generator

The generator pulley on my car is mis-aligned with the other two pulleys (Crankshaft & Water Pump. When installed it is lower in the rear of the Generator compared to the front of the Generator. Any one with an idea why?

Along with this should the mounting bolt for the Generator be installed from the front or rear, or doesn't it make a difference?

Thanks for your time.

Put the bolt in from the front, in case it might be slightly too long & might rub the fan belt.
Sounds as if the brackets on the generator "might" be tweeked or bent?? If the rear part of the bracket bolts to the generator case, "maybe" it's the wrong one?? Is it an original looking generator?
A pic might help.

I can imagine the fan pulley on the water pump being out of line if the impellor isn't in the correct location on the shaft, but I can't imaging what would make the generator be out of line, other than having the wrong timing cover on the engine.

Take a look at the mounting hole in the timing cover. It may be all wallowed out and egg shaped.I've seen this a lot on old machinery that the generator was run loose on for years.also, make sure the mounting bolt holes in the two end plates are round, not egg shaped.A little wear on those three parts can add up to a big sag at the rear of the generator.

I'm confused about your mis-alignment. Is the generator not parallel to the crankshaft, or it the pulley setting further back from the crankshaft pulley?
It sounds like Keith has the answer for it not being parallel.
Do you have a picture?

Here is a picture that I took. The stick is inside both the water pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley and as you can see it does not align with the generator.

Thanks for any help or opinions.

Could you post a picture showing the whole generator?
Is it possible the rear mount is the wrong one or is missing?

I can assure you I would not put a generator on the car with only one bracket.
Now having the wrong bracket is a possibility but........
I have another generator that I think is junk but used it to compare and below is the results with pictures.

I guess we don't need pictures of the "Duck Tour" I took recently in Boston!!
Sorry about that so lets try the two pictures below.

The mounting hole looks larger, and it looks like somebody carved away part of the bracket near the mounting bolt. Now compare the rear brackets,to see if the hole in that is egged out too.Check the timing cover mounting boss too.You can actually get away with all the points egged out,as long as you don't try to use one of those aftermarket adjusters.Just the one bolt through the mounting ears is all the A needs to work just fine.

Yep, I see the same thing as Keith and oldwoodsman. I would use the rusty brackets after sandblasting and painting them. You'll have to remove the 4 rivets to change the front plate, so be sure to buy the rivet nuts first.

Also the lock washers for the two long through bolts should be under the screw head rather than by the nuts. This will keep the bolt further away from the pulley, and it's the way Ford did it.

Thanks to Oldwoodsman, Keith True, Tom Wesenberg and Bill Williamson for all your comments and suggestions. I will get back to you tomorrow as I have other commitments today>

Thanks again to all!!!

Well today I installed the rusty generator and made some difference but not enough where I would call it good. Checked size of holes in rusty generator and the black one that was on the car and both where like .501 -.503 so I don't think that is the issue. Also put two different bolts into the generator mount on the timing cover with no noticeable wear but could not measure the hole. I also compared another rear bracket and could not see any difference with shape or hole dimension. I finally put the black generator back on with no fix. I have to go to a Vocational School with other club members tomorrow and it is only about two miles away so I didn't think it was going to hurt anything. So...............what now?

With the generator mounted to the engine and the bolt fairly loose can you pull the generator into position??

This is a very interesting thread. It's like a whodunnit, a good mystery. Can't hardly wait for the solution!:)
