mirrors on a Phaeton

Todays question is where can I mount mirrors on a 1930 Phaeton. Obviously, I'm new to Phaetons and I'm learning as I go. The car has one mounted on a wind wing which I'm not happy with. In fact, my thoughts are to remove the wind wings. Sniders has one that according to there catalog mounts on the left station. Cant see any pre drilled holes to do this. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like your in the same fix as I'm in. I've got a 1930 roadster pickup with chrome stanchions with no hole. Have been advised to get a smaller thread size and screw in the countersunk screw hole that holds the stanchion on. I don't like the mirror mounted down that low so when I get some time will drill and tap for the mirror up about half up the stanchion. Never could get a measurement for this.

Originally only the 30-31 deluxe roadster and deluxe phaeton had a mirror mounted on the left stanchion. I beleive there is a nut welded inside
the stanchion for this. 30-31 standard roadsters & phaetons only came with a windshield frame mounted rear view mirror. Some Model-A parts vendors sell repop deluxe stanchions with the left one set up for a mirror
or the left and right stanchions set up for mirrors. Also, deluxe stanchions are shorter in height (length) then the standard ones.;)

I had mirrors mounted on the windwings and they always vibrated out of focus. The station mounted types looked out of place. Phaetons look best without mirrors so you have to turn your ahead.

You could do like the Europeans and mount it on the fender. I have also seen photos of American cars that mount there also. Re spare tire mounting, if your car vibrates so much that mounting there will not work, I would think any place else your mount it will suffer the same thing.

Another line of thought when it comes to mirrors, some of the reproduction mirrors are made so cheep and lite they vibrate badly. The older mirrors had more weight in the construction (thicker material) and vibrate a lot less. A friend of mine has two mirrors on his Model T, both mounted on the windshield stanchions, one on each side. From the outside both look the same but the one on the drivers side, a newer repo, does the small city thing. If you look at them side by side, the drivers side mirror uses thinner material in it's construction.
