Mid 1930 Cowl Bands Revisited

Several days ago I believe it was Mr. Parr who posted several photos of an early and mid-30 cowl band in response to Ron Rude's previous post. I was curious and looked at my May '30 coupe and June '30 150-B woodie. I was surprised to see that while the coupe had the longer band extending to the sill molding, the woodie had the earlier style band that stopped short of the sill. I wonder if this band was used on all the commercial cowls introduced in June and how long they remained, i.e., through '31??? Unfortunately, my '31 150-B is at a different garage and I can't see it. First photo is the coupe, the second is the wagon.

I posted this because the response was the shorter band stopped in early '30, replaced by the longer band in mid-30. I wanted some clarification about it.

Steve,

Checked my 30 Coupe. It has the same band as your 30's.

Prior to installing my band, found the body was punched with square holes for the band studs above the moulding ?

I was under the impression the longer band was an earlier item; that the sill moulding stopped short allowing the band to extend to the bottom of the sill line ?

My first A, a late 31 Coupe, had the later band like our 30 Coupes and did not have the square holes in the body ?

Ron, your statement here is correct. The early band is the long one that extends beyond the molding and mounts with carriage bolts. Your earlier post that I corrected said the opposite. Sounds like you have a cowl made during a transitional period.

Its a 30 Standard Roadster; the windshield and top bows are the are the giveaway. You can also see the welting seam in the runningboard shield. Doesn't appear to have the usual rust out in the bottom of the cowl. It also appears to be an early 30 as the cowl band doesn't extend below the lower bead; probable the cowl band is held in place with studs in the cowl band.

What a neat vehicle, shouldn't be restored, just cleaned up.

Jerry,

You are correct, in my first post I used the word early 30 when I intended to say later 30.

Sure pays to check your post before replying.

Ron

If my memory is correct there is a longer cowl band on the Cabriolet that runs to the splash apron since the bottom bead is short and does not go to the hood edge.
