Michigan DMV?

I'm not sure about OH DMV laws so I'm not going to advise you on that. MI has records back to 7yrs, unless the car has been used and tagged for longer. A simple bill of sale, or application for a lost title from the current owner showing the visible number of the car, job done, no harm, no hassel, no 10 weeks. I've lost a couple titles over the years and the process is as painless as it gets. Over 7yrs, that engine number will not show up on any records. That's just the way it is and removes red tape for everyone involved...including the state.

In the past three years, I have walked into the SOS office with a VIN written on my hand and walked out within 15 minutes and the title in the mail within the week. I did this with seven cars from a 1941 to a 1972. I have heard rumors that it has gotten tougher in the last 6 months. Go to another SOS office!

All that changed Dec 2011. They now require a appraisal and surety bond if it is valued over $2500. I found a guy that does appraisals for $50 for this though.

I have to get an out of state inspection when I get it back to Ohio. The vin number on the car (which isn't there) has to match the vin on the title that is signed over to me. Without that the inspection won't pass and I can't get the car titled in Ohio in my name. DMV told me Michigan started titling cars back in 1918, so I can't use just a bill of sale. Ohio says I have to have a title for it.

Your original post says the car was issued a VIN but the tag has 'dis-appeared. Does the present owner have a title in his possession with that VIN# on it?? If so, I would affix a tag with that # to the frame/firewall and get a VIN insp. ??

Just to give everyone an update, it looks like the Michigan DMV will be out to the sellers house this Thursday to apply the VIN sticker. You all can imagine how happy I am right now that it didn't take as long as they said it would. If all goes well we should be going this Sunday to bring our new leatherback home :-)
