Metal valve stems for 21" tubes

I found out that I need metal valve stems and covers for my newly restored '28 CCPU to be eligible for a blue ribbon in Touring Class. I did not have a copy of the Touring Class Judging Standards when I ws restoring my truck. (My bad!) (I received 446 points out of 500 at French Lick and should be able to improve that considerably with out spending a lot of money except for the valve stems.) What is the best way to proceed? Are the reproductions a good investment? Do they look original? If not, are there originals out there if I look hard enough? Do they usually require replating? Are the '28-'29 stems, covers and related hardware nickle plated or chrome? Thanks for any help. Don/WI

Don,

The reproductions do not look like originals;

Yes, they are out there if you look hard enough...keep up the advertising for them on MARC, MAFCA, Ahooga and Fordbarn websites (make sure they are a matching set...need RS for descriptions as there are about 8 plus or so combinations);

Yes, they MAY need NICKLE plated.

Good luck.

Don,
I think the reproduction valve stems and covers that A&L Parts Specialties in Canton, CT sells are pretty close to the originals. They are not cheap, but much less expensive than originals would be if you could even find some. I was quite satisfied with the ones I bought from them last year. A&L sell good quality items. I think you would get most of the points for judging using A&L stems and covers. I suspect like Steve said, a very good judge could tell the difference between originals and A&L repros, but they look very good to me. I would guess that many touring model A have repro metal stems on them. I think the difference in judging points between rubber valve stems and repro metal stems would be significant.

As far as I know, "blue ribbon" and "touring Class" are two entirely different things whether it is MARC or MAFCA. In touring class I don't believe there is any benefit to spending hundreds of dollars extra for original stems. In blue ribbon or "Restored Class" I'd guess the point loss for reproductions would be between 5-10 points.

Even if you are working towards MARC touring class it is silly to not have a copy of the full Judging Standards for reference.

You are in touring, FIRST FIRST FIRST spend the 5.00 to get the book, why compete without knowing what to do.. Next just get the A&L that is all you need for touring, read the manual,, metal valve stems...PERIOD. NOT Metal valve stems that are nickle plated.. Just Call A&L and you are done.. and GET THE BOOK...
