Somewhere on the Old Barn, I remember a post on how to install a Metal Oxide Varistor on a generator to avoid electirical spikes from a generator, does anyone recall or know how to install one of these?
Have you made a choke? heavy solid copper varnished, wrap 8to 10 coils with eye on each end. If you want more choke action wrap around iron core ( use paper or other insulation) stops noise in radio and reduces spikes. ernie n Tx
I had one on my generator before converting to an alternator. As I recall, it was connected between the armature terminal and a through bolt via a pigtail.
A connection to the armature would be correct for a transient voltage suppressor unless you have a shunt type ammeter then it would be connected across the shunt or ammeter terminals. Since Ford mostly used inductive ammeters the generator or voltage regulator would be the place to put one. The aircraft I work on have them on all relays too but the older Ford vehicles usually only have two. The starter and the horn. Neither are long term holding relays so they really wouldn't need them but the horn relay is a maybe. Overdrive relay would be the only other one I can think of if so equipped.
A 6-volt system usually doesn't get too many big spikes but they can if the voltage regulator is a bit iffy.
