I have a 53 mercury with the merk-O-matic transmission will there be problems swapping a regular flywheel and a clutch to the crank shaft. what should I look for to prevent having balance or other problems. I have an adapter to install a T5 to this mercury engine. should I use the 9" flywheel and clutch or the 11" flywheel and clutch My old car buff friend says use the 9" All help needed Thanks Lyle

Any 49-53 Ford flywheel will bolt to the merc auto crank. Don't use an earlier flywheel as it will cause starter position problems. If your adapter is the type that uses the cross shaft clutch linkage (like the 32-48 Fords), you may find it easiest to run down a 1949-50 Merc flywheel (or redrill a 49-53 Ford) so that you can the 10" Borg and Beck pressure plate. That way you can mount a collar over the T-5 bearing retainer and use a stock 32-48 Ford through-out bearing. I have always felt there was a reason that they used a 10' clutch with the torque of the Merc crank.

if i remember right you have to also change the starter as the auto one has a completly different end on it :):)

OK I have 5 engines and transmissions. from49-53 some are ford and some are mercury. I do have a cross shaft bell housing. I am going to have to look through my parts and see what all I do have. I have the bushing that slides over the front shaft housing to use the ford throwout bearing.and I have the brass or bearing bushing for the center flywheel . Should I use the brass or the roller bearing???? The 52 engine had the side leaver clutch arm with the small clutch and a roller bearing that was rusted and ruff. I removed it to throw away.(overdrive 3 speed) The 49 Mercury had large clutch.Dont know what was behind it. I have one engine that I dont know what it is. Ford head on one side mercury on the other. (furcury or a murford) it do have a ford o matic behind it. Got to check the stroke one of these days.4 or 3 3/4.53 mersury is a mercury I removed from the car myself.I got 2 running ford-o-matic engines. I was told the murford came out of a 52 ford convertible. DID ford cars have automatic transmissions?

Do you fellows want a good merk-o-matic or two. they both work and I have all the parts shifter and all.

I have a 52 ford 2 door and a 53 mercury 4 door. I will trade or swap for stuff. or sell cheep.

I can answer a couple of questions from post #4 for you. I would use the ball bearing instead of the oil-lite bushing for the pilot stub. Oil-lite wears too quickly and your input will get to shaking around. Ford cars had the Ford-O-Matic version of the same trans used in the Mercury. I don't know enough about them to know if there are significant differences ie different tail housings/shafts etc. I'm sure you'll find someone looking for an operational Merc-O-Matic. All mine have the 3-speed with B&W R10 electric overdrive. I'm still working on a way to use one of these in an AV8 conversion for my 29 Sport Coupe and still use a torque tube drive.

Make sure that the end of the crank rear has enough room for the trans shaft, this a very vague memory- but you might want to check it... Karl
