Merc-O-Matic transmission

After letting the 53' Mercury set for about 2 weeks, when I start it up it blows trans fluid up and over the top of filler tube. By the time I get to the end of the driveway it stops. Checked the fluid with the engine running and warm after a drive and it is between the hash marks...not over filed. This does not happen with regular driveing. Cause?????????????? I know the obvious answer is to drive it more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All my old Mercs are overdrive types so I don't know much about the old Merc-o-matic. I'll relate this experience I had with a turbo 400 though. We have the pesky dirt daubers down here and they will plug any hole between 1/8 inch and as big as they have time for. I had one plug the vent tube on a turbo 400 and it started blowing fluid out the dip stick tube on start up. If the Merc trany has a vent you might check & see if it has a critter there or some other form of blockage.

When I checked the level once the car was warmed up, it was half way between the Low and Top hask marks.

It appears from the responses that the causation is that the Converter is draining back into the pan.....probably a bad seal.....looks like I just need to drive it more, but if I am going to let it set for a week or two, when I start it up I need to shift between reverse and first to load up the converter....
