Merc Crank Plus Quick Tip

Preping my Merc crank to send to the machine shop and wanted to pull the plugs using the tap and slide hammer method. The right size tap (14 x 1.25) is available at most auto parts placed as a spark plug tap. Finding a bolt that size however is almost impossible. You can use a 14mm spark plug but I found out that a Mini lug nut bolt is the same size and costs about $2. Works like a charm.

Thanks,

Hi Everyone, Hey louisb, thanks for the tip. You aren't gonna use that motor oil in the picture in the engine are you?

Great tip! I'll write that one down.

Another good tip is be sure the rear thrust surface is in good shape before grinding journals. It can be spray welded and reground.
