Merc coil

Anyone have a known good coil for a '41 Merc? I want to compare it to my rebuilt one, see if it fixes my running problem.

Hey Tom, just a thought but perhaps you'd be best to get a rebuilt coil from George Haney. You will then know with certainty it is a high-quality coil.

By the way, what are the symptoms your vehicle is experiencing.

Here’s what I had/have. When I bought the car it had remote coil setup on the left, the right side is a Skip Haney rebuilt coil and a CharlyNY rebuilt distributor.
Both setups have a condenser from Tubman. When Charlie rebuilt the distributor he found the shaft bent so that was fixed. Runs great now.

My coil is rebuilt, by Haney, and the distributor by Charlie.. Admittedly, I am grasping at straws. This is although I am a good troubleshooter which is how I made my living for 28 years, and independently for considerably more.

The vehicle symptoms are this: It shucks and bucks at a steady speed and under hard throttle even though pulling hard. I keep going back and forth blaming ignition and carburation. I removed the plug wires from the conduits in case the wires were shorting out inside. I replaced the ballast resistor with a new one as it was not increasing in resistance much as it warmed up. I also inserted more resistance in the primary circuit via the primary of a 6 volt coil. I wondered if the rebuilt coil was shorting somehow. No change. My next move is to rebuild another carb that I have. I previously had a bushel basket of 94's and 97's, but they went in my auction along with distributors, coils and complete engines, along with '32 Ford stuff and a mostly restored '37 Ford truck. Nothing brought much. I regret putting that stuff in the sale. I do appreciate the help.

What condenser are you running I know you can’t always get a good one from NAPA, I bought one from Tubman and haven’t had any issues, also post some pictures of your 8n, Im sorry I sold mine a few years ago.

I always thought primary ignition when under acceleration. Never a fan of wires running through conduits.

I am using a new NAPA condenser provided by Charlie when he went through my distributor. I will email him and ask if the entire unit with the new condenser was tested. I know of no other way of testing a capacitor other than through an ohmmeter, but hard to do with a low capacitance condenser. I believe there are meters capable of doing so, I will google to that effect. And Tubman is out of his.

At some point pics of the 8N will show up.

You are correct, I am out. Old age and arthritis have pretty much out an end to my being able to stand by a lathe and do the required manipulations. When I get back to Minnesota next month, I'm going to talk to my partner (a youngster of 77) and see if we can make another run.

Tom… “It shucks and bucks at a steady speed and under hard throttle even though pulling hard. I keep going back and forth blaming ignition and carburation”…..did you do a vacuum test to see if you have an air leak……or, could it be running lean……Mark

Mark, I did, but I am going to revisit it. Not running lean, plugs look like it is on the rich side.

what about the power valve in carb, been replaced and with the right one ?
Yes, it is correct, running is no different than with old one. Today I am going to put old condenser in and see if that makes a difference. New one might be bad.

Update, old condenser made no difference. I ordered a condenser checker in order to compare the two that I have. Lost the NAPA p/n I had. Would like to order another for a spare. Can anyone have the # for me? Also have a carb kit coming so I can rebuild the spare one I have. Till then likely no updates on my dilemma.

Success at last! I got to the point where I was convinced it was carburation. The reason I came to this conclusion was this: With the air cleaner off and the engine at a fast idle placing my hand only slightly above the air horn it would choke out and nearly stall. When by using the throttle to run it more into the mid-range and doing the same thing the engine would smooth out and gain rpm. I have suspected a low float level, so when I rebuilt the spare carb I increased the float level 3/32 from stock. What a difference, totally smooth with lots of power. The car ran really badly with this carb prior to the rebuild.

I had previously checked the fuel pump flow (it has an electric pump as well as the stock pump.) Made no difference in the running with electric pump on or not. Not sure why one was installed. Next is to send the original carb out for professional rebuilding as the temporary one is not correct, no throttle shaft hookup, and a distributor vacuum connection I do not need. And yes, no fault with the ignition. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Yes Mark it was definitely running lean!
