The machine shop just called me out to look at my '50 Merc block after cleaning and magna flux. Two cyls have deep gouges at the top (broken rings). They probably will require a .060 or larger bore to clean up. Do I do a clean up bore for the other cyls and sleeve these two or go for a big bore Merc? It will be in a street driven 28pu. (1000 miles per yr +) He also wants to square the block but noticed that some the valve seats on one side of the block stick up slightly - enough you can catch your fingernail on them. They don't look like thicker seats. Two other seats need to be replaced (rust) and he says he removes the old seat and bores the hole larger for an oversized seat. Doesn't trust fitting std seat in old hole. These guys are worrying me as they don't do many flatheads. What say experts and those with an opinion. I need your input before I sink a lot of bucks into this block.
