Memorial Day Old Airplanes

While I was working on setting up the differential on the sedan last Saturday, a B29 flew overhead. I could hear it coming, there's nothing like that sound. The 29 and the B17 were at Moffitt Field last week. The week before 3 P51's were doing precision flight drills over us, now that's an awesome sound.

One of the guys in our Model A chapter was a tailgunner on a B17 doing flights over Germany way back then. He, of course, gets a free ride on those planes when they come into town. There are not a lot of these guys left with us anymore. They're all my heroes.

Yea you sure cant beat the sound of pretty much any WW2 aircraft. Been to a few air shows with them flying around.

I was workin on my AA in my grandparents toolshed on thier farm and heard a distinct propeller airplane flying around. Figured it was a cropduster or something but wasnt expecting him to fly over the shed THAT close haha. Scary noise commin from the backside to get 20 feet above the crops in the field across from you. Couldnt imagine being in europe in WW2 and hearing a whole squadron of Spits or BF109's flyin over...

The B-29 (FIFI) and a fair number of other WWII aircraft, as well as a lot of vehicles and re-enacting/living history groups will be at WWII days in Reading, PA weekend of June 7, one of the biggest WWII events on the east coast. We'll be there with our '42 Ford Tudor and our '42 MB Jeep with the Home Front group. If you like the history of that era, and want to spend a very enjoyable day or two, come on out.

I was at Oshkosh when they had the WWII 50th. I think it was the most WWII era planes flying in formations since the end of the war. Absolutely stunning to see and hear.

Pietenpol Air Camper Model A

Funk Aircraft used a model B "B Funk"

Yes. The Funk head is very very very rare since most of those engines were pulled to convert the Funk to a "real" aircraft engine. Most of the engines were put in old cars or race cars but they threw the Funk head out. if anyone seeing this sees one advertise it in Trade-A-Plane and you will make money.

The Funk engine was installed upside down as I recall. The Funk was the same Funks that did the tractors you may know of.

A real Pietenpol has either a B engine (few used an A) or a Corvair engine. However many were built with Continental aircraft engines and a dozen other powerplants were tried. I got a ride in one as a kid that had a Czech built inline four aircooled engine.

The 29 and the B17 were at Moffitt Field last week.

Not wanting to pick nits, but actually it was a B-24. The Collings Foundation was at Moffett Field with their B-24 "Witchcraft," B-17 "Nine-O-Nine" and P-51.

The B-24 and B-17 did 'flight experiences', taking passengers early in the morning and late in the afternoon. I went up in "Nine-O-Nine" that Saturday afternoon. It was sensational.

I've flown in "Witchcraft" a few years back, and in three other B-17s in recent years. I'm obsessed with them and would love to go up in all the surviving airworthy B-17s. And I very much need to go up in one of the few operating C-47s since my dad flew them in the war. The only problem is the ones that are airworthy don't do national tours like Collings does, reaching out to people all around the country. I'll have to travel to a home base or regional airshow for the opportunity.

Same for the B-29 "Fifi" which is definitely on my bucket list to go up in.

Wonderful planes.

The guy down the street from me got his DC-3 type rating and twin rating in a former C-47 a couple of years ago. Look in Trade-A-Plane.
