mechanics wire

You need soft wire, hard wire breaks when you twist it. Rebar wire works if that's the size you need. G.M.

The best I've found and used is soft stainless fishing wire as used on commercial fishing boats. Strong, easy to form and doesn't rust.

Last month I went to Home Depot to get another roll of tie wire and couldn't find any on the shelves. I found an older gentleman who worked there and he told me they are not going to carry it any more in rolls. He went to the back and dug around and found me their last three rolls.

I use electric fence wire, galvanized and about the same tensile strength and flexibility of tie wire.

Most grocery stores have large compactors for bailing cardboard. The wire that holds the bale together is galvanized and 1/16 dia. They are about 10-12 feet long and very strong. If asked, they would give you a few.

Are we taking about "bailing wire ?" the old timers used to use to tie on loose mufflers and such? and why does a Mechanic need wire? I'm kinda dumb sometimes

Mechanics wire is used in several places on the old fords. Special bolts have a hole drilled in the hex head. mechanic's wire is run through these holes thereby tying them together as it were, and twisted at the ends to keep the bolts from working loose. Safety feature. I believe most any good wire of the proper size will work.

I've always known it as "Safety Wire", and you can still get it through McMaster-Carr, or other industrial supply companies.

Mechanics wire is different than safety wire, mechanics wire is soft, safety wire harder and doesn't really stretch.

I use mechanics wire to hold things in place.(like prepping my exhaust, measuring for brackets, bend, etc), and is quite reusable later on.

I'd never use mechanics wire to use as safety wire through bolts/nuts to secure them, it's not what it for, nor would I use safety wire to tie up an exhaust to measure things out, kind of a waste.

But that's just me, but do know they are two different things for two different purposes.
