mechanical fuel pump

A few of you may remember that a few weeks ago I was having trouble with the mechanical pump on my 272. I replaced it with a pump for a 390 that I had laying around. just got to fooling around with it on the bench the other day and noticed how much "freeplay " in the arm there was before the pump actually started to pump. this surprised me, so I stuck a pressure gauge on it and I could get it to put out 5psi. It did not work when installed on the car. I guess because of to much travel in the arm before it " engages " the diaphragm. I compared it to another Y-Block pump I had laying around. enclosed are pictures of both showing the travel of the arms. do you think that the one with the longer travel can be rebuilt, and what do you think is causing the excessive travel? ---Jim

I replaced mine a few months ago due to a punctured diaphragm. The old one and the new one dont have any play.
Maybe a weathered arm axis / shaft?
