Maybe the wrong place for this but. . .

Came across the 8" drum center register difference before, found there were
two sizes out there and confusion on the years used also. Thought I had made some notes; but?

Learned a long time ago that unless you pulled the rear end out of the car yourself; the sellers identification may prove to be faulty.

Do both your axle ends look like the one you pictured?

All the 8" axle ends I have seen have an oblong recess in the center.

(sorry about the metric ruler, took these picture when I was setting up some brakes for a guy in Italy and wanted to make sure the drums matched his axles)

When you buy cheap this is what you could have bought.
The only drum for a 65 mustang shows 2.441" But for a MII 1976 shows 2.537"
So being MII they could have giving you shorted axles.
When I did my 39 I used CE kit and 1977 to 1981 Granada rear its just drops.
NO thinking at all. If I were you trash or chuck that rear end.

I think the best comment was to "keep strummin' the ol' banjo" what was that communist measurement device I saw? mm?

no-no-no, I fully understand this condition. I don't ever want to get caught in my shop during an earthquake. I don't think I would make it out.
