Can anyone tell me if a 1992 mustang 5.0 will bolt directly to a 1974 250 6 cyl C4 trans? And will it even handle the v8?
Thanks guys,
Rowen

The 6 cylinder C4 has fewer clutches in the forward and direct. May not be a problem short term but will definitely have an effect long term with less clamping ability. I would suggest that a 4 clutch forward and 5 clutch direct clutch pack be installed. These came in pickup and van plus some V8 applications. Also, halve the low reverse band and intermediate band adjustment and you will swear there was a shift kit installed. Low reverse 3 turns cut back to 1 1/2 and intermediate 1 1/2 cut back to 3/4. I did that for years and the customer loved it. There is no adverse effects by doing so.

Be sure to check the fly wheel balance before you change it out. An out-of-balance fly wheel will eat up a rear main. Ford used various balance schemas on different year/motor types. for example, the 5.0 and 302 use different counter weights and I don't know if the 6 cyl is internal balanced or not. Someone on here can shed some light. I just know enough to know to be diligent in this subject.

There are basically two different fly wheels for the small block Fords, 28 oz. and 50 oz. Bell housings and tooth count vary on the early V-8s. Both require their respective harmonic balancers.

289, 1963 - 1980 = 28.2 oz.
302, 1981 - 2001 = 50 oz.
351W, 1969 - 1997 = 28.2 oz.
351C, 1970 - 1973 = 28.2 oz.
