Here is the chart that Marco made and posted several times. I know some people ask about the rear spring, and the information from Shelly's Fordbarn can't be accessed.

Unfortunately the letters A through E don't spell out the body styles, but hopefully you can figure it out.

A was tudor, town car and town car delivery; D is sedans DL delivery, Special Delivery; E is Panel deliveries, 76A&B,82A&B,85A- AA panels, all pickups and woodies and A mail trucks

Thanks Pat!

So, that would leave "B" as the Phaeton spring, which is the same as the Tudor spring with the 9th and 7th leaves removed.

And of course "C" is the Roadster spring with 7 leaves, plus the dummy leaf.

Tom,
Thanks for posting Marco's picture. I remember it, but couldn't assess the old Fordbarn. This time I am going to save it on my computer. I hope the definitions of A through E are right. It would be nice if Marco would confirm the key to the letters. It would sure be nice to have access to the old Fordbarn, as where is a wealth of information there. Maybe some day.

It appears that, like you said, I could correctly remove leaves 7 and 9 from my 10 leaf spring on my phaeton. I don't know why it had a 10 leaf rear spring, someone evidently swapped it. Maybe it was hauling a heavy load or some real big people! I was mistaken when I said my spring had 9 leaves. I still had the frame partially on it and only counted 9 leaves, however there was a small one on the top I didn't see until I removed the frame.

My 28 Phaeton also has a 10 leaf rear spring. My car belonged to a college kid back in the mid 50's, so I figured it was a party car and hauled a lot of kids.......thus needing a heavier spring.

I have seen quite a few coupes with 10-leaf springs and was told that many of these ended up that way because, back in the 40's and 50's, somebody needed a new rear axle and these could be pulled from most junk yards for about 5-10 bucks. It was easier to leave the spring mounted on the axle so the coupe got a 10-leaf if it came from a sedan. Somehow, the 10 leaf minus #7 and #9 doesn't look quite the same as a stock 8-leaf but maybe that's just me?
