i have a 30 model a roadster.im trying to upgrade my engine for drivability and reliability. My original engine seems to be sound compression is at 55 to 60 lbs.My question is what combination of things i can do,with least amount of problems.I was thinking of changing to a stipe cam,and snyder 5.5 head. maybe headers and dual carbs. What header is better thinking of red headers cast iron or steel? This is my first model a just trying to make it more reliable and maybe add a little power and gas mileage. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A ccounterweighted crank will add life to the babbit. A 5.5 head will add horsepower and maybe a bit more fuel economy.

I've got a single Weber carb with the Weber cast iron exhaust manifold. Lots of pedal left at 45mph.

I remember several years back that a single model 94 on an aluminum intake was said to dyno test at a ten horsepower increase. I'm not sure now who said it but it was a reputable person on ahooga. The jets have to be just right however or it may not run at all. The dyno tests over on Charley Yapps Secrets of speed site show that two stock Tillotson model X or XF carburetors when used on his aluminum vortex dual updraft manifold, gives a ten horse power boost to a completely stock model A engine. There are several combinations that show the horsepower gain with various speed parts that should be of interest to you. A higher compression head and a better cam will be of great benefit also. A lighter flywheel won't add any horsepower but will give one of the biggest boosts that you will feel in acceleration and throttle response. It will also help gear shifting the unsycronized transmission. The engine will accelerate and decellerate quicker with the lighter flywheel. when you cut the switch the engine will stop instantly instead of freewheeling with the heavy stock flywheel. The lighter flywheel will be easier on the main bearings also.
