ok, so i got the stock distrib working like a top.

the backup mallory system is making progress. bought spiral core wires and new 29219 coil (no ballast req'd) (at the request of mallory tech) and after turning the distrib clockwise i got it to fire up.

problem is

1. black smoke from one exhaust slightly (on startup)

2. throttle i get some as u call it "ping" sound.

3. very hard start (like the engine wants to jump off the stand.

4. spark plugs are "black"

did not have any of this with the stock distrib.

again, in case u were not following earlier...im trying to get this unilite to work and keep as a spare in the trunk for long journeys. (extra distrib, coil, and wires) (it only takes about 10 minutes to do the swap if i got in a pinch.

only reason i bought it is because i originally could not get the stock distrib to fire. but with help from bubba, its great now.

ping sound is what is making me really nervous...

any thoughts appreciated CP.

The Mallory's typically are shipped with the incorrect advance curve. ( most are set at 36 degrees like a small block chevrolet) Even the latest new ones out of the box are way off the mark.
Got to have them re-adjusted....
