A good one to share from my monday customer work load. The old school mallorys are a very nice dependable unit and have a very adjustable advance curve with very little mods.
The chevrolet units are on ebay pretty cheap and thats what this customer did. He bought one on ebay and had it shipped to us ( see pic) After a total degrease , teardown and machine its back together and time for a spin....
Note that the advance weights and springs are adjustable by bending the tabs and they use a light spring for low speed and a heavier one for the higher range. Total advance is also adjustable ( this one was set at 12 degrees / 24 engine) and didnt need any changes.
Housing and shaft are machined to flathead specs and a new drive gear is installed with roll pin. The shaft is cut for either merc or ford and this customer is using a ford cover as shown testing for fit.
Contacts are in great shape ( i used a ultrasonic cleaner to kinda refurbish the contacts) and adjusted on the tester. Unit was spun on machine and had 24 degrees at 2600 rpm.
I used the two piece cap and the old brass condensor. Even though the condensor has a visable crack it tested good and we just clear coated it ti prevent any future moisture and should run with now problem.
Pretty neat way to get it done at a low cost. This one will be ran on 6 volts as well.
