This cap has a groove cut out of the steel to accommodate the oil groove cut into the Babbitt.

Haven't seen this before,,but I haven't seen much, so I'm curious,,is it Ford?

All the little changes and mods that Ford did through the months and years are interesting to me, this seems like a good idea.

I have seen lots of them, it doesn't show up on the Ford prints. It may have been done at some of the rebuild plants, the reasoning is sound. They would make a skim cut on the cap to get to clean steel, the spiral groove would make sure that the oil groove would not weaken the Babbitt. Also gives a little more surface area for the Babbitt to adhere to.
