magneto workings

Does the voltage returning to ground once the spark plugs have fired do anything to increase (pre-energize?) the output of the magneto?

I wouldn't think so. The magneto is alternating current (AC). Thus the plugs are firing from ground as well as to ground in alternating frequency. If anything, this insures each collapse of the magnetic field is complete and the next field ramp-up is complete. I'm not an electrical engineer but this is how it seems to me.
