macs antique auto

Chuck Sea/Tac (post #56) is right about the efficiency of using a print catalog and their 800 Toll-Free phone number.

However, the online website of the Vendor's catalogs offers 24/7 utility that the 800 Toll-Free phone line does not. It is this online "Search" that causes some of us frustration. With America spreading across 4 time zones, and hours of operation scattered around the clock, the online website does have a distinct value to some of us, as an important adjunct to the printed catalog.

Here is what it looks like from this end of the planet.

I have a 29 grill shell that is straight but was a bit pitted. Last time it was plated it took the guy several weeks of building up with copper plate and grinding down and it came up great, cost was $75. Stored near the sea it has deteriorated. I hate to think what it would cost now. Here are ebay.com new ones with postage to here ....

US $138.65 Gearhead postage $71.66
114.99 Speedway 66.92
189.95 Seidiedog 489.99
168.50 Ammusle 95.45 Vintique
140.50 Macs 58.90 Nice Import
151.00 Macs 213.71 Nickel nice import
279.31 Macs 279.31 Chrome shell with stone guard
Vendors
195 Snyders unknown Loooks like Vintique number
231 Brattons unknown foreign made
139.50 Mikes unknown fair to good
180 Berts unknown

Any ideas what to choose?

If you had one replated by a good plater, and it corroded, you have no chance with a new one. They are all imported from some place where I think they just wave the part over the plating tank. I am far from the ocean, and the new stuff rusts within a year.

I have heard that many of the chrome plated parts that suppliers sell now are "flash" plated, hello Vintique. The way plating shops normally plate items is called triple plating - copper, nickel and then chrome. I believe triple plating, done correctly, will last a long time, as it has a good base for the chrome. The chrome top layer is quite thin even when items are triple plate. With flash plating, the item is cleaned and then just flash chrome plated with the minimum amount of chrome, which is expensive, to cover it. This means the base is more likely to start to rust much sooner than if it had a copper and nickel base under the chrome. I am not a plating expert, but from what I have learned, what I wrote above is the way it is.

I just can't believe posts are back to mac's
If they are as bad as all say how are they still in business?
I've not had bad experiences but ordered very little
Berts #1 with me but snyders brattons serve well too

Rusty , you are correct on your plating knowledge.

For 20 years, I worked closely with a local plating shop , a third generation small shop that did good plating. Most, not all, Taiwan items that are plated, are plated with the "flash" method you described. It only lasts well in dry climates and if waxed often.

Regarding the 1928-1929 Grill shells. All are made by a Taiwan Company called KNS, and re sold at various prices by different retailers. They make them nickle and chrome plated.

They are not that bad at all. The same people complain over and over again. Mac's very likely outsells all the others. People that don't like them should just skip the post and refuse the catalogue. If you got beat on postage that is your own fault. Find out the cost beforehand. A wise person would do their homework. If the part is inferior send it back. If you hate them that much don't even consider their produces, just move on. It is not healthy for the site to keep beating on a parts supplier. They have 1000's of satisfied customers and a few vocal dissidents! Bill Willuamson wrapped it up nicely in a previous post. Wayne

I have ordered LOTS of parts from Mac's over the years. Figuring shipping and handling, the true lowest cost to my door has usually been Mac's. I have been happy with the quality, they are always good about telling you when a part is quality or not. If I make the decision to buy quality, or less so, thats my decision and I live with it. I have ordered from most of the parts houses and have no problem with any of them. We in the model A hobby should be happy for the plethora of parts options we have available. Mac's catalogs are a wealth of info, no matter where you place your order. I have no interest in getting into an argument with anyone about anything, just posting my perspective. They definitely have their place among the model A parts houses.

I have enjoyed this thread. Regarding the search feature on some websites mentioned above. I too have noticed this on Brattons and Snyders websites. On ours, it only searches the title (name) of the part, not the description. So, if you type in "door handle", you get anything with door handle in the name. Works pretty well I think. Please let me know your thoughts. You have to enter our website modelastore.com and enter the order online portion of the website. Let me know what you think. I tried the door handle and pitman am bolt searches mentioned above and they both work as intended.

Steve @ Bert's
Steve & other suppliers,
I've NEVER had a serious problem with ANY of you folks:):):):)

Received a package from Bert's yesterday, I was at work and did not get a chance to open the box until 1am when I got home, had a small problem with the order, so I sent an e-mail at 1am, before I could wake up the next morning (today) and call them, they had my replacement parts in the mail and on the way to me.
Now try that with any of the others.

140.50 Macs 58.90 Nice Import
151.00 Macs 213.71 Nickel nice import
279.31 Macs 279.31 Chrome shell with stone guard

So this is a perfect example.
Why would Macs have three excessively different shipping cost for the same part to the same destination?
They just cannot be trusted.[/QUOTE
I would think that a statement that they can not be trusted may well open you up too a defamation of character lawsuit. Let's see what happens. Wayne

Don't understand what is being said here. Guess I cannot read very good.

US$140.50 Macs postage $58.90 Chrome nice Import
US$151.00 Macs postage $213.71 Nickel nice import

That might make it a bit clearer.
Maybe nickel is real heavy...

Thanks for the info everyone. Might get a quote for real plating.

On shipping costs:

For less than I was recently quoted to ship four brake drums to here ... I can get a return airfare on Qantas from here to LA.
