Got an email ad from Mikes A Fordable for a sale on lug nuts and washers. I got two As and neither one had washers. Are they supposed to? One of my fellow barners enlighten me.

The function of the conical lug nut washers is to make the clamp-up loads (hoop tension) in the hubs exerted by the lug nuts more uniformly distributed. So these washers have a value other than cosmetic. I recommend you install them.

I was taught that the tension is distributed by relieving the load on the wheel and gradually tightening every other lug nut on five lug wheels. I learned this from my father, who was born in 1907 and grew up with the Model T and Model A, and also from my first employer, a man who owned a Ford dealership in the 20s and 30s, and ran a Shell service station, where I worked as a kid. I've never used the washers, but I understand they do offer some benefit in certain circumstances.

I use the washers to prevent the holes from getting wallowed out, threads are still higher than the nut so grip is not affected.
