lower distributor shaft

i took the distributor and the lower shaft out a few weeks ago to replace my head gasket and now i cant remember which way it goes does the end with the shorter notch go into the bottom of the distributor thanks in advance jim

Should be the same depth notch, no? I thought it was the same? Just make sure that you line up the notch correctly because it's eccentric.

i have an early a i put it back together the shorter notch goes towards the distributor

If you really must know, carefully examining the ends of the shaft and the coupler with a 10X magnifier will reveal which end was 'friendly' with the the dizzy.

Flipping the shaft will not change your dizzy timing setting, as the included angle between the slots milled at the shaft ends will be the same irrespective of orientation. Swapping a different intermediate shaft will require re-timing.
