Low to high shifting

If low and high bands were a little too tight in adjustment (dragging) would that cause a severe jerking hole going from low to high speed?

Thanks...:)

If you're not up to speed in low, then shift to high and she bucks, it may be too far advanced on the timing. Idling in high gear through a parking lot does much the same thing. ws

The clutch is in neutral when you are in low or reverse. There is no band involved in high, its direct drive with the clutch engaged. When your foot comes off the low pedal there is a short window when neither low or high are working and the clutch is slipping. As the foot comes up off the pedal in a nice quick smooth manner, the clutch engages and the car is in high. You may just need a little more practice. The chattering is the clutch disks grabbing each other.

I'll bet the advanced timing will be my fix. I'm new at driving and I've been pulling full advanced timing after the engine starts and leaving it there. Now I understand the bucking. I should have known better.

Thanks all!

Usually, as mentioned above, your kind of shift problem is practice. The hole you mention is likely you coming off the shift pedal too slowly. It's a bit faster than a stick shift clutch in use. Some back off the spark a bit some do the throttle. Besides all that each car's a bit different.

Between that and needing to wind out in low a bit longer. Theres no need to let the pedal slam, but don't ride it either. I close the throttle, then let the pedal up kindy easy, then after its fully engaged, open the gas, making sure the clutches aren't slipping (they shouldn't!). That cycle lasts maybe 2-3 seconds.
I also run full advance all the time unless "lugging" like the parking lot thing or attempting a long hill in high gear. As soon as she bucks, retard the spark all the way and advance as tolerated. Another 2-3 seconds to reaction window, or its back down on the low pedal. ws
