Low Gear Death

Now that my '26 T is running on all 4: when the handbrake has the car in neutral, I depress the gear pedal to go into low and it shudders and wants to die, and unless I give her a good amount of gas- she will die. Going backwards is fine and smooth, not an issue- only forwards is an issue.

What might cause the low gear to kill the engine?

Thanks-

I would check the band adjustment but I believe you said on a earlier post the the car can be pushed freely by hand with the e-brake in neutral (vertical) this might eliminate the band adjustment. How is is running? What is the compression of the cylinders? (by gauge. Not fingers). A worn engine could give you trouble when starting off. 60/65 lbs. per cyl. is good. 40 not too good at all.

Since I bypassed the lever and just used the pedal- the cars runs well. Maybe it was the lack of use and congealed oil between the discs? Now she is smooth and goes into low gear very well. I'll keep an eye on her just the same.

Thanks, cars are meant to be ran and enjoyed...further proof.

Thanks to all!

Murray Fahenstocks book The model T owner shows how to adjust the shift pedal for free neutral. It's worth a look. Try the MTFCA Forum and punch in Free neutral on the search section to see the story + a diagram. Also: warm it up and change the oil if you haven't already.
