Question: my 1941 Ford Sedan Delivery 3 speed on tree w/ 3:54 rear end has a loud whine while decelerating. no noise under acceleration or coasting with clutch depressed. how do I determined if noise from rear end or transmission?
Get someone else to drive it around while you lay down in the floor over the rear end and/or transmission (I simply refuse to use "******") and listen carefully, with your ear to the floorboard if necessary. My 2¢
Yes, most likely rear end since in 3rd gear the input shaft is connected to the output shaft and there is no power transmitted through the transmission gears.
