Loose Worn Guides

Hi all, I am going to re-ring my 28 A , I pulled the head today, there is a lot of lateral movement in the valves , should I bother replacing the guides ? how much movement should there be or what is allowable ? not being cheap, I just dont want to disturb things if not needed. Yes, if the guides are shot, would help to replace them.

Just be sure to NOT fall into the trap of replacing the seats if they are still good, or serviceable. A LOT of opinions are to replace the seats with new inserts.

Make sure you check the bore in the block the guides fit into, most are loose,
You may need to ream them and fit oversize guides.

Shouldn't be any detectable... lateral as in an open valve you can rock side to side???

Yes when the valve is open (head off) I have quite a bit of movement , I can rock the valves in all directions. These are such a forgiving old engine I was hoping someone would say some play is alright. Thanks

Yep I will change them all, any chance the valve stem is worn ? I hope I do not have to replace the seats. I actually have a seat cutter from the 30s

You'll have to do the seats after changing the guides, might get lucky on a few. I'd hang the 1930's valve seat reamers on the wall for display and find someone (machine shop) to grind the seats. Some lapping compound will not replace pilots and grinding stones used by experienced hands. Mic. the valve stems for wear, its two hands clapping.

The guides and valve stems are worn. If the valve guide bores in the block are worn you can put a lite Knurl on the Outside Diameter of the One piece valve guides.
