loose valve guides

I bought a set of modern valves and guides for my engine. When I removed the old valves, all the intake guides fell out with no force. The exhaust guides had to be knocked out. These new solid guides have the same flange as the split guides. Is it normal for the new guides to be installed with out force? I can install them with slight finger pressure. Is this ok? The spring is the only thing holding them in. They dont feel wobbly. Any help would be apreciated. thank Bill

Hi Bill,

When I did my engine some of the original style guides just fell out others had to be knocked out with the valve tool. In my opinion that is normal for an 80 year engine that has gone through many rebuilds. I put in the original style guides and keepers and they all went in fairly easily. And yes the spring is only thing holding them in.

the original split guides are a slip fit, held in by the spring. Its usually carbon from combustion gases that locks in the exhaust valves over time, and they can be very tough to remove when that happens. Modern guides are usually pressed in.

Slip fit into the block is correct. Valve springs will hold the guides in place with no problems.

From what I have seen, the new guides with the shoulder like the originals, are a hand push fit. The new guides that do not have the shoulder, are a press fit.
