Looking For Recommendations

Looking for a source of the carpet studs with the correct end that needs to be peened over. All the parts suppliers have the studs with the threaded end, which is of course not correct.

Also looking for a recommended source to rebuild a set of shocks.

Well, the easiest way method I have done is to modify a 5C collet and put a groove in it to clear the ring that female portion snaps over. Then use a Collet holder in your lathe chuck to hold the Stud with the threads towards the Tail Stock. Center-drill the threaded stud portion first, and then stabilize the Stud using a live Center so you can turn the threads off. Then install & peen as normal.

Rebuilding Shock Absorbers is kinda misleading from my experiences because several wear items inside the body are difficult, if not impossible to remove. This prevents someone from using a rotary table or a lathe to true the worn areas where the Stator can be built-up with weld and then machined to fit the Housing bore. So, from my experiences all someone is doing is repairing them where they will hold oil.

I used to build shocks 15-20 years ago. Some can be eliminated for rebuild just from the outside. If they had a “fighting chance “ you’d have to open them…..not a pleasant or easy task. After opening (back then) maybe 1 in 5-10 would make the a decent shock (maybe with a little heavier fluid). I’m guessing that maybe 1 in 15-20 might be in that category today. I got very weary of it!!
There’s a guy on here Brentwood Bob that used to advertise shocks and rebuilding. Might seek him out??

One of the best shock rebuilders is John Holland. He is very reasonable and does excellent work. John's rebuilt shocks are on my A and I am totally happy.
Give him a call at 303-483-3896.

Thanks for the input. FWIW, my research has found a model A parts company in Britian that still sells the hollow studs as original. Not real keen on ordering from such a long distance though.

As to the shocks, I have not been able to reach John Holland. Looks like he is retired as noted by others.
