Looking for proven methods....

Gentlemen,

Looking for proven methods to install the aluminum roof moldings on a 30 coupe. These moldings have the open gap up top that is peened over once nailed. Any methods you could share to insure clean bends and methods to seal & peen.

Thanks in advance,

My first one was on a 1930 AA, and I messed up the first one. I didn't predrill the nail holes in the oak and had trouble driving a few nails all the way in. I rolled the aluminum over using a piece of oak and hammer. Wound up having to remove it, buy another new aluminum strip and predrilled the nail holes on the second try. This time it rolled over nice and tight. Work end to end and roll a little bit at a time. Might take 3 or 4 times back and forth, but it should seal with a nice tight gap.

As far as sealing, I think a string of dum-dum, black calk, or such layed under the aluminum would work fine. Once the aluminum in nailed down you can rub away the excess sealer.

Brent,

Yes I am working on a coupe, the front aluminum across the visor and the perimeter pieces around the top material. Any feedback on how best to fit and seal is appreacited,

Thanks,

OK here is what you can do;

Build a jig to bend the monding where necessary. Make a sandwich of plywood cut in the radius you need. The top and bottom of the "sandwich" should extend over the molding so it won't trist when you bend it.

Now this is important! You need to put some aluminum strips in the opening to keep it open when you bend it!

I took masking tape and ran it along side where the molding goes and marked where the openings were in the roof. This keeps you from trying to nail throught the metal roof and into the wood.

Now to fold it over, after you install it you need to take a piece of hard wood about 1"x6"x1/2" and cut a V in one end. You place the v over the molding and hit the wood with a hammer. This will close the molding.
