Long shaft on distributer

Just watched a 3 yr old video where a long shaft was fitted . I just dont like these as it assumes the head is perfectly aligned to the block which I would bet could be a couple of thou out . The short shaft top and bottom slots are offset to each other so act as a sort of universal joint . When I oil mine I "twizzle" the rotor to check the part rotation is not stiff . I recently had one which was after several thousand miles, food for thought .

I've owned and seen both. I kind of like the shaft made up of "parts" for the reason you state - but the additional joint COULD make timing "jiggy" for the unaware.

Actually in real life with new components the fit between segments is quite close. Not that I haven't seen a slip of leather used between segments. It must be the "pounding and wear" between segments which eventually allows using leather. Technically there shouldn't be a need.

Long distributor shaft weren't available when I set up my last engine - and I chose to use "all new" out of mechanics' conservatism.

Wife says that is an occupational failure.

Then there are the wobbygongs, the wotsamucallits and the whatsits.
Don't ask how I know about those things!
