Hey Tim: Here is a fun picture - shows the top of the block with the top-girdle that I designed as well. You can see the breathing potential with the port work. I had between 400 and 500 hours on the ports and top-girdle.
Having big steel "girdles" top and bottom are "band aids" to hopefully keep it together. It has no valley floor in the middle - I was worried that without that strength, we could split the block - that would be a very bad day!
