i have a 1940 ford coupe and i am installing a lokar floor shifter the floor pan is new and the transmission/driveline tunnel is kind of narrow i tried to mount it on top of tunnel will not work i bought the mounting brackets for trans. mount and cut out the tunnel i still have a clearance problem with shift arm on frame and crossmember any help or pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Is the trans a c4 or worse a th350? If you show us yours we will show you ours, pictures i mean. Even with an auto the chassis may need a little massaging.

There are different Lokar shifters. Which one are you using? What transmission? Lots of missing information.

327 w/700r4 transmission i tried floor mount would not work so i cut out tunnel and went with trans. Mount i am a lot closer now but still have shift arm/linkage clearance problems.

Without photos it is difficult to understand the clearance problems. Also, have you tried posting on the HAMB? They might have a better idea of the issue as most of the information/knowledge here is related to flathead Ford V8s.

Why not use a column shift? If you have the stock 40 column it can be converted to shift the automatic.

Here is a pic of a c4 long stick. If I remember the trans plate can move and the shifter can move. In park mine is as close as I can get it to dash.
This is a 8ba with c4trans 1939 standard.

You can get more help on the HAMB.
