Locking door handles

I picked up a couple of locking door handles for model A coupe at the Hamburg swap yesterday. One handle has been nicely plated...with the lock cylinder in place!
I cut a key to the code, but the cylinder will not turn. How do you remove the lock cylinder without destroying it? If the cylinder is not useable, does anyone have a good cylinder for sale? Thanks, Ted

I'm in the same boat.
I have a mint 29 Tudor locking handle, except it's too bad they plated it with the lock still in place.

I have the same problem. My tudor came with the original popout switch and key that alos fit the door handle. I had the door handle plated and the plater never mentioned that the lock would not work after plating, so I had to buy a repro handle. I still have the original handle, and would love to get it fixed, but do not know where it could be done.

Send me your address via PM and Ill send you a handle and keys. You can take both to a locksmith, change the cylinders out and you should be good to go.

Special this week only, no charge for Canuck Barners!!!!!!!! :D

Hi Ted,

My separate "un-replated" door lock, (not in the handle), was corrosion-frozen and would not work. Previous owner said it did not work in 30 years.

I called first and sent my complete door lock to Mr. Dick Crabtree, (an expert "Model A" locksmith), with phone # shown as: 605-487-7229.

He "un-froze" the lock, fitted a key, and I can now lock my Model A.

If it is at all possible to get a re-plated door handle w/lock to work, he would be the first person I would call for his advice.

My pickup came with a locking handle and key, but does not work.

What I would like to do is to install locking handles on both doors, keyed alike. Just haven't figured out how to do that just yet.

Ted, how was the Hamburg swap meet? I've been there a few times and always bought the brown shopping bag mystery items for $2. I never open it up to see what I had bought till all of us were back in the truck ready to come home. This insured that I wouldn't come home empty handed. And fun too. The exchange on the dollar held me up this time for not going. Don't really need much. But that is a good market. Jeff

+1 on Mr Crabtree and his lock and key service . He has serviced both my locking door handle and popout ignition switch. Highly recommended.

Probably they are frozen due to that Alaska permafrost. :D

I also have used Dick Crabtree for several jobs.

Excellent work,

Very fairly priced,

and Quick turn around.

Really a nice guy.

My experience. :):):)

Jeff, it was the first visit for me and my friend. We had expected a larger Model A seller presence, but we're very happy with our finds. My friend found the NORS front and rear shackles that he was looking for, plus lots of little bits such as points, brushes, etc. All good old stock at give a way prices. The weather and border people co-operated too! Didn't notice the brown bag mystery items though. Ted

After someone stole my disabled placard out of my Tudor I ordered a pair of repo locking handles off ebay, and to my surprise, they were keyed the same for both sides.

I remember buying a new house and a new lawn mower years ago, and after about three (3) days later, I came home and noticed someone stole my new spark plug off of my new mower.

I called my neighbor & started complaining until my neighbor told me how fortunate I was to lose this spark plug.

He told me the thief was honest enough to take only what he needed and left the entire rest of the lawn mower on the carport .... What?

My dad, later in his years, bought a new mower and after using one time it would not start again. I found the spark plug was loose in the head! Maybe dad just didn't want to mow his yard anymore :-) When I was a kid I was trying to get our mower running, when dad came home for lunch he messed with it a few minutes, then said lets eat I will bring you a new mower home after lunch! When he came back with a mower, I asked thought you said you where going to bring me a new mower. He said new to us, I said does it run, he said if it doesn't you know how to get it to run.

A couple years back I bought a key cut from the number on my 29 Roadster's rumble seat handle. The guy who sold me the key suggested that I soak the tumblers with penetrating oil for a week and then try the key moving it back and forth with light pressure to loosen it up. It took me two or three times and I added oil every day but it did come free and works great now. Last summer I traded keys to have an original one with my car and it worked a little better than the new key - no good reason for it, they look identical side by side...
