Locking door handle for 32-34 trucks?

I have a large collection of door handles which I have been sorting through. One looks identical to a 32-34 truck handle, except it has a built in lock cylinder and a very long shaft.

I want to make sure it ends up finding the right car. Do you know what it is from? I have been looking at photos of panel trucks of the same vintage, but the handle on the rear door appears to be the same unit as the cab door handles.

Thank you for your help!

Ford never made locking door handles for 32-34 commercial.Although similar your handle is not at least Ford.Might be a replacement aftermatket but I doubt it.How did you come up with the $225 price?

I second deuce lover's comment. Ford door locks were consistently separate from the handles for both passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and trucks throughout the 1932-34 model years (and beyond).

Deuce Lover and David G.

Thank you both for your comments. That was my suspicion from the photos I've looked at. If not for the lock and the length of the stem, it is nearly identical. I was thinking that it could be for a panel, but they appear to be separate as well.

Any other ideas of what it could be for?

Sorry, but I have led a sheltered life with little to no exposure to brands X, Y, and Z. My one dalliance off the one true path was a '53 Studebaker Commander coupe while in college (a nice car by the way).

Many years ago there was an uproar in the V8 Times regarding a '34 Ford that had an exterior door handle with a lock in it. The common belief was that Ford "Never Did That". Many months later information was uncovered which disclosed that Ford did in fact use door handles with locks in them. As I recall a whole series of vehicles made it through production without the provisions for door locks in the doors. The factory was going to turn the production run back through the factory, remove the door's, retro fit them with door locks, repaint and refit the modified doors.
Henry Ford caught wind of this and put a stop to the retro fitting. H. Ford reputedly instructed an employee to go out and purchase GM style exterior door handles with locks, install same and get the vehicles out of the factory with no disruption to production.

blucar could you please direct us to the issue(s) of the V8 Times that details the discussion?
I have issues going back well into the early 70s so looking thru them would be time(excuse the pun) consuming in the least.
Thanks, Phil

I am not sure about the date of the article, I just know it was a long time ago. I don't have the majority of the V8 Times I once had, my wife decided that I did not need them, so she discarded them.
An additional side bar to the '33-34 Fords is that Hudson used Ford bodies on several of their cars when Hudson' body factory burnt down.. The main body core was Ford, the fenders, etc., were Hudson.. The public never knew.

Hi Everyone, Phil, maybe this is a lead? May-June 1983, page 54?

Well, maybe not. That section seems to talk about how doors lock by moving the handle up or down, and it seems to be about 1933's. It's referencing 'Instruction and Assembly Change Letter #20' 12-1-33. So, dead end there.

Edit to add: There is a searchable index of the V-8 Times available here: https://www.earlyfordv8.org/V_8_Times.cfm

Blucar. . I think it was Hupmobile not Hudson. I stand to be corrected. Dave

I had a brain hiccup when I said Hudson used the '34 bodies, it was Hubmobile. They used them on the '34 Six 417 4dr sdn. There is a pix of the Hubmobile Six 417 4dr sdn on page 725 of the Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805- 1942

Thank you very much for the information Blucar. I wonder if the handle I have is one which was used at the time. The shaft itself is much longer than the 32-34 handles seem to be. Do you think this could be the right handle for one of these odd ball Fords?

Very tangled, it looks like this would be the correct issue from the snapshot you posted: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-V8-Ti...855163?hash=item3ac3f71d3b:g:T5wAAOSwEOxXPgeG ?

Thank you for all of your help!

Also, the Ford bodied Hupp is definitely something special: https://barnfinds.com/not-ford-1934-hupmobile-417-w-coupe/

With all due respect, the V8 Times details how to lock the door itself by moving the handle up or down.
I was under the impression we were discussing door handles that had a lock built into them because the door did not have a separate lock cylinder.
Two different topics/handles as far as I am concerned

Hi Everyone, 32phil, you are absolutely correct the reference I provided does not further the discussion. It was a dead end. I was trying and failed in locating information referenced in post #8.
