Live and let live.

I want to be a driver first and foremost and have been trying to be one for the last 15 years but that is coming real soon. I'm a "purist" as in original looks but not as in obsessive, phonatical. I admire the mechanical perfectionists for their knowledge and the innovators for their ideas and progressive thinking and after 34 years of interest in flatheads I'm still a "greenie" ( I don't like "Green" political parties) because I'm still learning.

As we all should be and I hope to continue to be. Green is good. It's fresh, flexible, humble, still growing in knowledge. There's a very fine line between ripe and rotten and one that thinks he's no longer a greenie but has arrived at ripe can very quickly and easily find he's fallen into rotten without even realizing it.

Henry ,

Great post , i guess i have been in every one of your groups (hopefully not in the same day)...

I think the internet should have
brakes" , holding all repys untill the following morning for the writer to re-read and decide if he still wishes to send the reply. I often answer real quickly and sometimes for ever reason the following day wish i had answered differently.

The other issue is its hard to judge emotion in a email....was the guy kidding, trying to be funny or serious ???? Need to learn your crowd for sure.....
A new guy coming in to the barn could get hurt real easy...

Again good post !!!

Profound words. Reminded me somewhat of my military career and when I knew it was time to leave. Or maybe it was the new snot-nosed Major who was going to set the world on fire while standing on my back. Hmmm.

great post , I have trouble finding just where I might fit in the category...not a purist nor a greeny but I do want to drive them without breaking down to far from home I want the performance and good looks as well...I love to tinker and make them better but also like the OG look... come days I like wide whites and some days I like spokes and black walls... These old cars have become a sickness to me and yet I don't want to get well...they have been a driving force for all my life and even though they have driven me crazy at times I am a better man from it

I like your style, John.
Thanks for sharing.

OLD HENRY, where is Orem Utah... I have a sister who lives in St George.. Utah is a beautiful State and I have traveled there many times but never saw your town of Orem

I'm a Greenie…. who is a Do-it-yourselfer … which keeps me from being the Driver I want to be….:D

Well said Old Henry. My wife and I just had a similar conversation just this morning about a comment left on one of her facebook posts. The point there being that this applies to many avenues in life; people with different interests or values often find it necessary to be critical of folks who don't share their interests or values.

By the way, I'm definitely a "Driver" but overlap into some (if not all) of the other categories you mentioned as well. Like 34Pickup said, "As for me... I just like old cars."

Next door to Provo, home of BYU, 250 miles north of St. George, 35 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Funny. I have a daughter that lives in Gainsville, VA two hours north of you.

I had two cousin that were brothers, Grant the older and John the younger. They were both passionate "car guys" in almost totally opposite ways. John got lung cancer and died. Grant spoke at his funeral and described their differences: "I'm a meticulous if not fanatical restorer. I have to have my car precisely authentic right down to the thread count on the upholstery and carpet. Whereas, John was an artist. He would start from scratch with a car as his canvas and his tool box as his palette and would turn that car into something unique and one of a kind but a beauty and joy to behold." That helped me see how two brothers could equally find joy in the same hobby in totally opposite ways, both totally legitimate. Don't know that either of them ever criticized the other for their approach. I doubt it.
