Lightened flywheel question....

I was wondering if there is an advantage/disadvantage to lightening the flywheel of the model a engine. I have a stock model a engine with headers and a custom intake with a single stromberg 97 if that matters. The reason i am asking is because i am swapping the stock trans with a T5 and i have the flywheel out right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The lightened flywheel will take some of the weight and consequently pressure off the rear main and extend it's life. It will also take some of the whip out of the crank and be easier on the center main. The V8 pressure plate affords the user an easier pedal while increasing the clamping force extending the life of the clutch disc. Anything else, call and we can talk about it, http://www.model-a-ford-4bangers.com/. The number is at the bottom of the page.

All of what James says is true, plus the engine will accelerate and deccelerate quicker for quicker shifts. Some guys are going to a diaphram clutch, may be smoother and easier to push?

Shortly after I bought my 1930 A several years ago, I had the flywheel lightened and the V-8 pressure plate installed. Some say that you will lose some low engine speed ability without all that mass, but I found that was minimal and the quicker response, less weight on the rear main, and most all, the easier pressure with the clutch pedal was well worth it....I would not go back to stock, but others will likely disagree...........

So.........if you lighten the flwheel on a stock A, there isn't any adverse damping or balance problems? I like the idea of a lighter flywheel but don't want to lose any "smoothness" in the motor.

Can you buy a lightened flywheel or do you just machine your stock one normally? New to the Model A scene. I usually mess with newer style Corvettes.

I know you can buy them anywhere from about $400.00 (rebuilt machined original) to $600.00 (billet aluminum). I plan on having mine machined by my local machine shop for about $175-$200.
