Light switch

I have a 1928 tudor. I am replacing the lighting wire harness and switch at the bottom of the steering column. The problem I am having is the very bottom of the steering box where the light switch fits into to mate up with the spider from the light/horn rod turns and causes the switch assembly to rotate when turning the horn rod at the steering wheel. I figured I had a bad piece on the bottom of the steering box so I got another steering box I have and it is the same way. So I don't know if I have 2 bad parts of it I am doing something wrong. Every time I fit the light switch to the steering column and snap the bail wire in place to hold it all together I have the same result. As I turn the light switch at the steering wheel the switch assembly moves with the light/horn rod and it all comes apart. It is a 7 tooth steering box if that matters.

Thank you for your time
Joe

do you have the little ears of the operating spider correctly seated in the slots of the upper switch half?

I agree, make sure the switch is lined up properly, I was doing some wiring today on my truck and had the same thing happen and I had the "legs of the spider" between the actual holes that they are supposed to be in and the stationary part of the switch. That kind of jammed the whole thing. But when I initially put it together it felt like it was right, if that all makes sense.

I don't see how the switch body can rotate if the tab is in the slot.

I'm assuming that his switch, like mine is a reproduction. My tab on my reproduction switch is not near as good as one on an original like in your picture. Also the spider, and the collar with the slot were still on my steering shaft, and in good shape so I didn't replace them. I figured in my case that was why they didn't first together perfectly. Once I got everything lined up correctly it works perfectly now:)

I might not of been completely clear on my issue. Yes the light switch does rotate but only because the lower bearing assembly ( as listed in Snyders catalog) portion where the switch seats is rotating. It is the very bottom part of the lower bearing assembly. Round with the notch for the switch to seat. The spider is positioned properly and the tab of the switch housing is seated in the notch of the lower bearing bearing assy. The lower bearing assembly is bolted to the bottom of the steering box ans is secure. But the round end is rotating as if a weld broke. I have not removed it from the steering box yet but like I said I have another 7 tooth box that I removed the lower bearing assy from and it also rotates and I don't believe it should. So if it is susposed to be a solid assembly I am wondering if I can braze it so it no longer rotates.

Thanks for your replies so far

Now I'm clear on the problem and have had to fix the same thing a couple times. Just remove the lower bad part and use a good center punch to stake it in several places. That fixed it for me.
