So last night I'm cursing down the road and my lights started flickering and the motor started sputtering and coughing turned off lights ran fine again. Now the only reason I was thinking battery is my battery has been very dead for a long while I just hand crank it to start. And I was thing that maybe it got so dead it stopped being able to regulate it with the headlights on or dose it not matter. I'm runing stock 6vt pos ground

With the headlights on there is more draw than whhat the Generator can supply. Try adjusting the third brush.

I while back I read about a remote third brush adjuster but I can't remember where.

You were cursing while running down the road ?? What were you cursing at,, the lights going dim ??

Your battery has been dead for a long time ?? What is your normal charge rate without the lights on ?? If its in the 10-12 amp range the lights should stay lit for quite a while.. If its down in the daylight normal range of about 5 amps then the lights may not last too long with a bad battery..

Years ago, when the Model A Coupe was my only car and I was broke, I would run out of battery during a long overnight drive. By disconnecting one headlight, I would be able to continue the drive and actually charge the battery. Now, I have better sense and a better battery but I have that idea in my back pocket if I happen to get caught in a similar situation. Gar Williams

Leaving a lead/acid battery low on charge or dead is a good way to shorten the battery life. Do you do daylight driving, and does it then charge the battery? If not then you need to keep a battery charger on it, such as a 6 amp charger for a few hours each day. You'll also need to fix the generator or what ever is wrong in the charging circuit.
