Light Switch Maintenance?

In Les Andrews book, Vol. I, on the Preventative Maintenance Check List, 1000 miles, has listed "Wipe out light switch (End of steering column)". Could someone explain this procedure, especially the "wipe out" part?

I would suggest a brush out with carb cleaner or something similar. Disconnect your battery first. If too much oil is getting through try one of those 'no leak tubes' from suppliers. Worth their weight in gold.
