Light my Fire

I had forgotten that the Model A has open igniton wires and today I was doing some last minute cleaning of the engine with a shop rag while the engine was Ideling. My rag touched the bare spark plug wire and lit me up like a christmas tree. It caused an involuntary jerking of my knee which jumped up and hit the underside of the front fender. After I quit convulsing and got my feeling back in my knee, I went for a nice drive. I guess it was just the old girls way of saying welcome. LOL I now have a real nice bruise on my knee.

I was 15 when I got my rdst pu for my birthday. My dad and I along with a friend restored the truck over a years time. The night before our first car show one of our team set the truck wiring on fire. Fortunately there was a flee market at the show so a late night of repairs set us up to win our first AACA award. My grandfather always had lots of magnetoes that he loved to shock us with as we helped him "test" them. I have a lot of his mags now. I wonder if my grandson would help me test one...................

I to have experienced a similar reaction. Washed the car on a hot summer day in shorts and bare feet, started her up and them reached over one of the plug straps while standing in water; I danced :)

I had just finished tuning up my Model T late at night after a long long hard day at work and had it idling nicely on magneto and was looking things over while being questioned in length what I wanted for dinner the next day. I noticed a spark plug nut was loose, so of course THAT had to be tightened down. Of course the nanosecond I touched it it brought me out of my fog, I can assure you. Biggerst jolt I have ever had (thankfully). Kinda brought me back to the notion that "you oughta pay attention to what yer doing."

They will "bite" you if you accidentally touch a spark plug connector while the engine is running. We have a man in the local club that will just grab a connector and it does not shock him. The "secret" is to grab the connector and hang on.

There was a fellow in our club who'd hold on to a spark wire while the engine ran (with no effect on him), and then he'd ask someone standing by him to hand him a pair of pliers. Lots of laughs.

Chief would touch multiple plugs, until the "A" was running on 1 cylinder, then the last one, zap! and that dude was DEAD!
Oh, yes, he owned a 4 cyl magneto from some old tractor and was always suckering some fool to see if he was strong enough to overcome the starting impulse mechanism. He only got me ONCE! Momma's out was, "Oh, my hands are clean and I'm fixin' supper."
I don't think Chief was "BORN," I think he was hatched from a giant egg dropped off by a spacecraft from KRYPTON! He said I wasn't born, He stated, "I found you in an old black hollow stump down in the woods and toted you home to Momma." Loved that man, he was ONE of a kind!!
I wonder if there's Model A's on KRYPTON?? Anyone know??? They might be FORD-BARNERS, incognito.:D

That is too funny!

After numerous incidents I figured out that the shock didn't hurt nearly as much as ricocheting off of the car.

Yea, the shock wasn't nearly as bad as my knee hitting the underside of the front fender. Now I know what it feels like to get tazed.

When I was young, my Dad had a 1930 Model A.
His friend opened the hood on the passenger side, the car was running with the spark up (retarded). He reached in and grabbed all four spark plugs at the same time and stopped the running car dead.
Not my cup of tea.

I've been talking to a fellow that has been having spark problems in his A.He says the spark is very weak, and he thinks he needs a coil.I told him to check the points first. He says they are fine, they open and close, and as long as they do that the spark should be good.I kept telling him that if they are dirty, corroded, gapped wrong,or other things he could have a weak spark. He said he could hold onto the coil wire while turning it over and just get a tickle. He just would not listen.I don't even know why he was talking to me,he already seemed to know what it was.He was standing next to the car, talking to me on the phone,so I asked him if the points were open or closed and he said open.I told him to put the coil wire a half inch from the head nut,and stick a screwdriver from the point arm to ground.Next I heard was a crash when the phone hit the ground, and some thrashing around and swearing. Then I heard a calm voice saying,I've got spark. He was so positive that the points were not the problem he held right onto the end of the coil wire when he grounded the points.I told him some people listen and learn, and some of us have to pee on the electric fence. My mini bike I rode as a kid had a little strap of metal to short out the plug to kill it.It was in a tight spot under the seat, and every time my finger would miss the strap and go right to the tip of the plug.I bought that mini bike 42 years ago,and I still miss that strap today.I still haven't learned.

I like to use this to explain the difference between voltage and current. We get thousands of volts from the shock but because there is no current it is not fatal. I will say though that if you are wearing a acemaker you may want to be extra careful prodding around a running engine. Even insulated wires can bite.

When I was young, dad managed for an auto parts store and Champion Spark Plugs use to give away minature plugs like used on Model airplane engines but were for looks only. Wanted to see how plugs worked so hooked the plug up to a large singe cylinder engine's plug wire and pulled the starter rope. Got a real education about electricity. We use to leave charged capacitors around the ET (Electronics Technician) Shop aboard ship to brighten up the day when people came in and picked up things they were not familiar with. Another thing that will light you up is the picture tube on a TV. They are a large capacitor and will remain charged for days after the set is turned off.
