Light bulb question

I see you can get halogen bulbs for 6v lights. I am fitting a stop light on my TT and would like a very bright light for stop. Lang's has a 50 watt single pin in 6v. Would this be bright enough? Comments? Thanks PK

Halogen bulbs at the same wattage are no more brighter than the same wattage incandescent. More watts equals more draw on the wiring. If you use the correct bulbs, your lights will be the same brightness as their 12 volt counterparts. Also watch out for heat related to melting the lenses like the taillights.

OK. I just found a review on a motorcycle site and they did a test that shows how right you are. It was a time on verses temperature rise. The halogen started to melt things in two minutes. The incandescent was 147 degrees in two minutes, the halogen was 470 degrees in the same time. He also took pictures that showed brightness. You couldn't really tell the difference. Now how do you convert candle power to watts so you can compare bulbs? Thanks for the help. PK

Bulbs of a similar wattage are going to give nearly similar candlepower. If you lookup a light bulb chart, you will find the information you are looking for. An example is 1157 is a common 12Volt taillight brake light bulb for more modern cars. An 1158 is the 6 volt replacement. An 1158 is similar brightness as a 1157. People get the wrong idea that a 6 volt bulb is half as bright. That would happen if you run a 12 volt bulb in a 6 volt car. Try bulbtown.com for specs. There are other websites that show the detailed specs of automotive miniature bulbs too. Hope this helps.
