License Plate Clip Installation?

Page 351 of the Service Bulletins shows the new designed license plate clips and how they are to be installed. I am looking for detail information on how the prior clips were installed. Anyone have a picture and/or information?

The Judging Standards, page 18-2 reads "Ribbed clips that hung the plate below the bar were used from the beginning of production until May 1929. Thereafter, redesigned license clips suspended the license plate from above the bar." Gar Williams

I have the same clips on my 28 as what Gar pictured. Some pictures show the plate mounted between the front and rear clip halves, but my plate will only fit the same way Gar has it pictured, on the front of the clip.

My clips are tight to the bar, but after a trip yesterday I noticed the front plate moves forward until it's at about a 30* slope. I thought someone had pulled my plate forward, but yesterday I set it straight down, and after a 20 mile drive it was sloping forward again.

that happens when you go to fast in reverse, slow down

I think Ford changed the way the plate is mounted because the new way is much stronger. On my early cars I made some braces that hang down the back of the plate from the bolts out of sight.

Tom's observation is interesting. My experience is that the early style has a tendency to move back until the lower edge of the plate hits the radiator fins. Not good. It takes a lot of torque on the two bolts to stop that from happening. The later style seems to stay in place, probably a result of a difference in leverage. On some trips, especially during the hotter months, I will remove the front plate to give better airflow through the core. That also prevents the front plate from accidentally causing a problem. I place the heads on the front of the plate. If for no other reason than it looks neater. Gar Williams
