let there be light........

Bill,
This is the EVR I make for the common long Model A generator. This is my demonstration end plate to show how the EVR looks installed. It fits in place of the adjustable brush and it's mounting ring. The 2 wires represent the field and output wires for the generator.

The cutout is still used with this EVR. The stock cutout and diode cutout are simply a one way switch to keep battery current from flowing back into the generator when the generator output falls below battery voltage. I prefer a good working ORIGINAL cutout, but a diode cutout works fine also. A&L makes a quality diode cutout, and Bert's in Denver has restored original cutouts for sale. I have never had a problem with my original cutout, but I know some of the repro cutouts are poor quality.

To the Alternator fans, please read again the excellent post by MikeK on the "Crushed Boiled Battery" discussion. His reply #14 explains why the common single wire alternator (which I have) causes troubles due to high output voltage (which I have).

If you don't care, well it's your choice and car; but at least think about what the problem can be with this type of design.

Note: The problem is not in the alternator, it's in the way the single wire version is designed.

I've always been hard headed about changing anything from what Old Henry had it, but when it gets to where you can hardly see to get home at night with the generator lighting and also in daytime giving hand signals. I think the hand signals was what made me surrender. I thought everyone new where I live but gave a hand signal anyway, well low and behold as I was turning, some young buck honked and passed giving me the bird hand signal.

It's the old question? Black or white. It is not so. Everyone should decide for themselves.
Alternator is not good, generator is great, or vice versa. That's not the question. It sure both have their advantages and a false solution does not exist.
The main thing is, everyone has fun with his "lady".
In this sense, greetings Barney
