Were the dealers provided with a template or overlay or instructions to know exactly where to drill the holes on the driver's fender to install the optional outside mirror ?
Thanks
Don't know about back then, but they were probably in the box with the mirror, if it came from the dealer. I worked for a large GM Dealership back in the mid '70's, and I installed several mirrors that were dealer installed options, and they all came with templates and instructions for installation. same with radio antenna's , etc.
Mine were on the door, not the fender but I've seen them on the fenders on Fairlanes and Galaxies, not the Custom 300. Best advice is to sit behind the wheel and have someone locate the mirror until you like where it is, trace around the base of the mirror. Maybe put down tape first if the paint is nice.
I'm using peep mirrors on my '59, which took a bit of getting used to and now I like them.
If you're considering mounting it on the door and may eventually want a matching one on the passenger side be aware of this problem.
It may look nice but it's mostly useless.
On the rear of the fender can work out better. .
I mounted a hooded mirror on the Edsel. I got my lovely bride to move it around on the rear of the fender while I sat in the car. Then I measured and centered it up before I drilled. I had the mirror for months before I got enough guts to mount it. You need it where you are not looking through the curve of the glass or it would be useless.
