Leaping Greyhound

This was on my 36 when I brought it eight years ago, I have seen the leaping greyhound on 33 and 34 Fords and the guy I got my 36 from was adament they were for 36's as well.

Anyway at all the events I've been to I haven't seen another one on a 36, was it an accessory or just the previous owners custom touch?

Either way its staying as its grown on me;)

Adamant or not, the greyhound was a Ford-released accessory only for the 1934 models. Those available for the '35 and '36 model years were aftermarket items not sold by Ford. If you like yours, that's fine and your choice, but that does not change history.

I still think to this day the most thought out, well designed and non pretentious mascot was the Model A quail. Signified simplicity, not over powering, but a common bird with a fast takeoff. Always heard Henry chose this personally, also contemplating cottontail rabbit which makes sense for a Michigan farm boy.

Clara Ford didn't like the anatomically correct grayhound. She made Henry stop using it. He did experiment with a grayhound, as shown in this Archives photo, but it never made it onto a vehicle. I think it is sort of neat myself.

The grayhound was used on the Ford in 1934 only. All others are unapproved after market accessories.

I like the Grehound ornament and have one on my 36 5W Coupe. See photo of the plaque I made to show everyone who asks what the difference is between the Jaguar and the Greyhound.

Lawson, that picture of the little bunny is cute. I just ran out to my shop and looked at my greyhound. Poor little ******* is not anatomically correct. Mine has apparently been NEUTERED! No wonder my coupe does not go as fast as the Jaguars!

I think that Clara Ford's objection to the privates of the greyhound is an urban legend (a story without a factual basis). All of the big Lincolns' (Models L and K) greyhounds up to and including the last of them, the 1939s, had anatomically-correct privates. I suspect that Clara spent more time in Lincolns than Fords.

In reply to 36 Henry. If your Ford was made in Canada in mid to late 36 (woodgrained dash), it is possible that it may have had a Greyhound supplied by Ford of Canada. I have included images from a mid 36 Canadian Brochure that seems to indicate that they supplied (or intended to supply) Greyhounds as part of their mid-model-year inhancements on Deluxe Fords.

There is no evidence that this accessory was offered in the U.S.

Don,

My Ford does have the wood grained dash and is a touring sedan, looks like Ford sold the same model differently in other markets other than the USA.
Thanks for the look at the Canadian brochure it was very interesting.;)

Why did Canada market Fords differently?

Don Summers I think it was reproduced the grayhound for 34 in stainless, with a free standing tail. I believe he still does.
