Leaky water ouno

So I just bought a 29 model a and the water pump leaks, at least I think. There are brown water stains on the motor, and the owner I got the car from said it leaks. I haven't had it on a cruise yet so I don't know. But if it is what are the suggestions in repairing it? Should I just buy a new one or fix this original one? You can see the brown water stains on the bottom if you zoom in closer!

Do you have the Les Andrews book, "Model A Ford mechanics handbook"?

You can get every part you need to build a water pump or rebuild your water pump, from the vendors. It all depends on how bad all the parts are that on on your pump now.

Unfortunately where i am the fire wall keeps me from seeing things on file sharing sites such as photobucket so I can't give you specific recommendations..

It probably only needs water pump packing added to the shaft. Easy to do.

Yes, read the Les Andrews book, Vol. 1, to understand how to do this.

Yeah I've heard that is the book to buy. I tried to get it from the Sacramento parts group, I heard they are really good to deal with but they are out of it for at least 2 weeks. So Monday I'll search around for someone with hr in stock and get it! And yes that is what my wife's dad thought to. Just needs repacking. I'll obviously try that first before replacing or rebuilding it! Thanks for the quick replies and help !

The shaft must be smooth where the bearings and seal ride. I rebuilt my pump when I first bought my car in 1992 and I built it exactly as original. Just be sure to pack some grease around the new lead packing rings, then lightly snug the brass packing nut. Check the packing nut a few times during the first hundred miles and you should be good for a long time. Lightly snug is tight enough.

Too bad someone was running plain water and created all that rust, but a paint brush and WD-40 does a good job of removing those rust stains. Use antifreeze to prevent freeze cracks and rust.

BTW, you mentioned 12 volts as being an "upgrade", but every change is not an upgrade, many times it's just a change.:(

Rotted cooling systems and rotted fuel tanks are red flags and one of the first things I check on a car. Usually deal breakers
Other underlying related issues could be a rotted head gasket, and a restricted radiator from all the crap.

i put on a leek-less water pump from Sniders, they are a great place to deal with, i usually get the parts in 3 or 4 days . Sacramento Vintage seems to have nothing i want in stock
