Leakless water pump.

Today I helped a club member replace the fan hub on his leakless water pump.
After I installed the new fan hub, I noticed the brass "packing" nut was completely loose. How tight should it be, or can it be overtighten. Since it is a leakles pump I assume that is has a different sealing system compared to a standard pump.

I rebuilt my water pump with a leakless kit which was basically a cartridge that pressed in from what I remember. The packing nut is just for looks now and just snugs up enough not to come loose. The kit, purchased from Snyders also came with a new shaft and improved impeller.

Thanks for the quick reply I really appreciate this. I tighten it untill it stopped. So if it is tight, no harm done. Thanks again for your answer.

Depending on the type of the leakless waterpump, if it starts leaking, the nut can be tightened to stop the leak and get you home.

I put three rings of packing in the nut just in case the leak less seal leaks. Nut is just finger tight

Fine minds think alike except Richard is 3x as thoughtful.

So many of those "original" pumps I have pulled apart to find only a single ring of packing. Perhaps the packing gets "worn-in" to the water circuit? Or perhaps its just more effective a seal than most appreciate?

For a while I was collecting "different" Model A water pumps. I probably have a dozen "variations" on the theme including the apparent "seal-less" 40 Ford seal variant.

Note the seal as part of the impeller and the lack of a gland nut.

My eyes aren't that good.

I can describe.

It's the Model A pump casting, minus the gland nut and uses the impeller/seal from a 38-40 Ford V-8 water pump. these married into a unit. I speculate this was available from Ford as a replacement for the original gland pump.

The weakness of this pump is in the "bronze bushing" type nose rather than the torrington needle/sleeve.

The pump I was working on is a leakless with the brass"packing" nut. I found it completely loose and thighten it back up. It did not leak before this. We just removed it to replace the fan hub. My question is, if this nut can be over tightened, or is it non functional on this type of pump? In this case I tightened it up all the way and there is no change in resistance when I rotated the pump.
I don't want to damage it by having the nut too tight.

Leakless pumps are not all make the same way. I would back the packing nut off and see if there is packing in there.

I would put a couple rings of Teflon packing in there just to keep the packing nut snug or you can use a type of lock tight. JMHO

I've had the bad experience of having that "leakless" cartridge just a tad too small for the pump casting (or conversely, the casting was a tad too large for the cartridge), and the leaking was around the outside of the cartridge, not through the shaft. The user of this unit compounded the leak by continuing to tighten down on the nut, which turned the cartridge in the casting and burnished the cartridge even more. In the future I'm going to carefully inspect and measure the pump housing, and likely put sealant around the cartridge when I press it into position.

Snyders has a note that the casting must measure 1.015"/1.016" to use the cartridge.
